Notes parents Parents Parents are important partners in the education of children. • Many EM parents value education highly and want their children to do well. • Many EM parents are unfamiliar with the English Education System. This website is a general site supporting parents about the system. • Many EM parents are keen to help their child but do not always know how to. This site has leaflets for parents which can be downloaded by teachers or parents. Each leaflet is linked to a QCA curriculum areas and gives the parents ideas and resources they can use at home to support their child. Translations into community languages are available to order by phone. Much of the homework we send home can be linked from the curriculum to the children’s languages, family and homes. • Collecting words in another language is something all children could be asked to do – parts of the body, and plants. • Looking at materials in the home – eg List 5 things that are made of wood. Bring in to school 3 items from your bedroom made of different materials. • Origins of foods from labels in the kitchen cupboard. Words in other languages for bread, fruit etc. Favourite or traditional family recipes. • Examples of other languages and scripts in their homes, streets and lives. • List the sources of light in your home. • What sounds can you hear at home, in the street, at night, in the day.
